Behind the Scenes Photos 2

The images below were taken during our second time of filming. These images were taken inside our second location AKA The couples' House.

These images are of the completed clown costume which consist of a mask, blue/orange jumpsuit which it tied around his waist and a white shirt with blood splattered across it for verisimilitude.

This image is of the boyfriend character grabbing a camera to place in the corner of the ceiling for our found footage.

These images were taken after we experimented with the clown makeup.

Below are some images taken from our third location.

Production Week 7

This week we have filmed the following scenes:
  • The following scene after the last scene we previously filmed.
  • The fight scene between the protagonist and antagonist.
  • And lastly the outdoor scene.
This means the majority of our trailer is completed only leaving us the Police Statement scene to do and then weare fnished our trailer.
I've also created a behind the scenes blog post showing images of the production and a makeup test blog post.

Makeup Test

For our main protagonist we used natural makeup to fit the time in which we shot this trailer. Their makeup is light, appearing mostly natural. However we wanted to take a different approach for the clown by adding some to his neck to bland in with the mask and around the eyes.

Acrylic white paint was used for the clown’s neck. This means the makeup was thick, allowing good coverage and wouldn’t fade while shooting. We did try using normal pant but the colour was too light and was far too thin. Acrylic was better and was picked up by the camera more. We were also working on a time constraint so finding affordable face paint in such a small space of time prove difficult so we settled for acrylic.

The makeup in the photo above shows that the white acrylic paint covers the front of his neck down to his t-shirt line. This allows the costume and mask to blend with the makeup.

On the image below we used yellow face paint on his eyes along with some white paint and eyeliner.

During filming we found complications with the eye makeup. The mask our antagonist is wearing shadowed his eyes which stopped the camera from picking up the detail of the eye makeup. For filming we will not be using the eye makeup but for the poster we will use the makeup as we can use lighting to bring out the photoshoot.

Shot List

1st Scene
Chief of Police: Mid Shot
This scene is to highlight the importance of the character present in it, the fact that the shot is focused solely on this character shows that he is the main focus and the audience needs to focus mainly on what he is saying as this part will be crucial to understand the plot of the film. The mid shot also allows the background to be visible in the scene which we found was common in chief of police speeches after doing some research.

2nd Scene
Extreme Close up of television remote
This expresses the emotions of the characters by showing they want to quickly get rid of this news and to link the first scene to the second as well as the characters to the current situation.

Couple on the sofa: Long Shot
This shot will show the way the couple react together and when hearing the news and to set the scene as these two will be the main characters in the beginning.

Couple Hugging: Mid Shot
This shot allows the audience to see the closeness of the couple and to draw in the audience so they will feel closer to these characters and will cause more of an effect when one of them dies and the other is in danger.

Main Protagonist: Close up/ Low angle
This shot will show the emotions of the character as the shot combined with the angle focus mainly on the character's face.

Boyfriend: Close up/ Low angle
This shot will show the emotions of the character as the shot combined with the angle focus mainly on the character's face.

Coming out of a hug: Mid Shot
This shot shows the relationship of the couple in the scene.

3rd Scene
Boyfriend putting up security camera: Long Shot
This shot is to show what is happening in the beginning of this scene

Shot from camera: Extreme Close Up
This is another shot to show Andrew putting up the camera and also to show that the camera is now set up and fully functional.

4th Scene
Couple lying on bed: Long Shot
This is to set the new scene within the bedroom.

Shot through camera of protagonist: Mid Shot
This shot will show our protagonist talking and messing around with the camera to show the blissfulness of the scene which will help s exaggerate the change in tone.

-DARKNESS-

Shot of Protagonist: Mid Shot
This shot will show our protagonist reacting to the sudden darkness, this will be foreboding as the darkness links to the 'darkness' coming for the characters.

Protagonist: Close Up
Shows emotion of protagonist growing gradually more worried by showing just her face that will let the audience know that something bad has happened.

Protagonist opens door: Long Shot/ Low Angle
This will show what the character is doing without giving away what she is seeing as it's just a trailer but will increase the tension in the scene.

Blood: Extreme Close Up
Shows what the character has seen and implies that something bad has happened to the other main character. It also shows that our main protagonist is now alone and possibly in danger.

Protagonist and Antagonist: Over the Shoulder
This will show the emotion of fear on our protagonist's face and also to introduce the clown as a threat to the main character's safety. This will engage the audience as she will not be able to see the clown behind her but the audience will.

-FIGHT SCENE-
Continuous flashes of white light and several shots of the action such as: close up of weapon, close ups of the damage they're doing to each other.

5th Scene
Protagonist with camera: POV Long Shot
This will be to set a new scene and raise tension in the audience as it will be in a new location that will be hard to see in with the antagonist still in pursuit of her.

Protagonist with camera: Over the shoulder/ Pan
This will show the clown behind her at one point then when she pans back it will show him disappear this will make the audience more concerned for the characters well being as it shows that the antagonist is nearby but now out of sight.

-DARKNESS-

Balloon: Mid Shot
The balloon at the end will look ominous and link the clown to the theme of the film and the balloon will be red which will give connotations of danger.

Ancillary Flat Plan 2

Below we have created a flat plan for the poster we are going to create for our trailer.

We have created our flat plan on photoshop as it will give use the right format to create our final poster. This also allows us to gain some experience with the software so that we can use it better.
The main image that will take up a large majority of the background is going to be our antagonist the clown. It will focus mainly on his mask, with a dark light to highlight certain sections of the mask and darken his eyes he appears to be less human. Below the image we have followed a few movie posters we have seen and will be placing the title near the bottom so the focus goes more to the clown. Underneath the title will have further information such as the production company that was involved in it, etc.

Flat Plans Ancillary Task 1

Below we have made our flat plans for our magazine for the first ancillary task. This will be for the review of our movie.

For our movie review page we took a look at other magazine layouts to get an idea on what we would like to do. We chose to have one large image for our double page spread as it looked rather professional and was common in most magazine reviews. Our Masthead will be in the top left corner, this allows the logo for the magazine to continue on to the page and putting it in the corner does not distract the reader from the article. We have added boxes to hold the main text for our review, a large section for our movie title and a bubble for our page number in the lower left corner.

This week we have completed our first flat plan for our ancillary task and we have continued with our storyboard.

Storyboards Update

Here are the storyboards we have completed so far:

Production Week 4

This week I have completed a 'Cast & Crew List' an 'Equipment Checklist' which I have made blog posts for. Leanne also made some fake blood and took step by step photographs which I have also placed in a blog post. Molly also created a music permission email the I have also made a blog post for which is linked to below.
We have also started our story boards and shot list for our trailer and will hopefully start filming later this week.

Risk Assessments

Below we have risk assessments we have created for each location. We have a total of three locations we intend to film at.
Our first location is outside Oxclose Acadmy School in which has a large red wall which we thought would look very professional for our chief of police scene.

Our second location is at a crew member's house. This is to add a realistic feel to our warm home vibe and later home invasion scene.

Our third and last location is going to shot in the local park. This park is only used by a few locals and dog walkers. The isolation the trees provide a perfect setting for our chase scene between our protagonist and clown.

Fake Blood Test - Step by Step

For our trailer we would like to film a scene that would require fake blood. For this we decided we wanted to make the fake blood ourselves and here is a step by step guide in which we did it.

Firstly we mix water with Golden Syrup to form a thick liquid that will not stick.

This is what the mixture looked like after this step was completed:

Second step is to add red food dye to the mix to make the blood colour:

After doing this we found the mixture was far too watery but was the right blood colour we needed:

The third step to thicken the mixture is to add sieved flour to the mix. The reason for using sieved flour was to make sure we would get no lumps in our blood mixture.

The fourth step was to add chocolate syrup to add a darker colour to the already red mixture allowing it to look more realistic:

Last step we added more red food dye to the mixture to get the right shade of red needed to make our blood look as realistic as possible. This was the end product:

Cast & Crew List

The Cast:

Antagonist, Killer Clown -- Thomas Peacock

Protagonist,Girlfriend -- Stephany Jakeway

Boyfriend -- Andrew Simpson

Chief of Police -- Kristopher Taylor

The Crew:

Camera man/Runner -- Jack Henderson

Understudy:

Tom's understudy will be Richard Winter

Stephany's understudy will be Bethany Ivison

Andrew's understudy will be Daniel Clements

Chief of Police's understudy will be Jeffrey Cruddas

Our cast has had to change before due to conflicting schedules with their other commitments so we made sure that we had backup actors this time in case any of them have to drop out for whatever reason.

Script

Here we have created a rough script that we will use for when we next film. In our script we have added certain locations and movements that we think are important as a rough guideline. We have added the details of 'EXT' and 'INT' to indicate whether the scene will be exterior (outside), or interior (inside). We do not intend for the actors to go completely off this script, as we have left room for their own improvisation.

Equipment Checklist

Here we have created a check list for our equipment. This list shows what we will need throughout our filming and also helps us keep track of our equipment so there are no mix ups.

  • Microphone / Boom
  • Photography Camera

Props:

  • Podium
  • Background Camera's (use as flash photography)

Production Week 3

This week we have completed the Location Recce and our Risk Assessments. I have also made a blog post for the cotumes and props we are going to use during the filming of our trailer.
We have also edited the script to fit the changes that have happened since we last wrote it.

Permission Slip

I...............................give permission to be in this production for Gateshead Student's Media.
Signed:.....................................
We will give these slips to each person starring in our trailer to ensure we have their permission to be on camera.

Test Footage

We did our test footaged at three different times of the day. One O'clock to get normal daylight, then four O'clock and finally at five O'clock as it was getting darker. We also used an affect on the camera during the day to give it a darkening affect.
We tried experimenting with the light to see which light was best to film with the mask. We found night time to be extremely difficult as the images were hard to see and the mask lost a lot of detail.
However we found that if the clown stands under a lamppost nearby that it creates quite a creepy effect and looks red on the camera fitting with out colour theme. We also used a normal touch phone to highlight the clown's face and found that more affective than the street lamp.

Costume and Props

For our antagonists costume we have chosen to dress him in a orange boiler suit which will by tied around his waist and a plain white shirt but we will have to buy a spare as he will get blood on it. He will also wear a full face mask with hair attached to the mask. We did not go with a full clown costume as it is unpractical for what we wish to film.
Our clown will also have the prop weapon which is a large fake axe. This shows the violence that the clown is about to partake in with his murderous ways.
For our protagonist, she will be wearing everyday clothes and possibly nightwear when the it shows her a few days on. This applies to her boyfriend also. The clothes and makeup shall follow a theme linking to the clown through the use of the colour red.
For our Police Officer who will be doing our statement, we will have him dressed in a suit to show his authority and his place in the police force. He will also be on his podium in front of an audience and cameras which will also mean he will be more dressed up than usual police working clothes.
The props we will be using will be found in the every home enviroment as the secene's will be set in the home. There will also be a handheld camera that will be used as a prop throughout the filming.

Music Permission

This is the email we sent to the producer of The Dark Ride asking permission to use his music in our trailer. This is so we do not breach any copyright regulations.

Tuesday, 18 November 2014

Trailer Music

This is the music we have chosen to put in our trailer. The Dark Ride by Prelude to a Nightmare gives off a haunted circus vibe which links to our clown. We will not be using the entire song for this trailer, just a short cut of it that we will also slow down.
Slowing down the track will add more suspense and more of a creepy aspect to the trailer.

Location Rece

1.    Are there any potential hazards that could pose a health and safety risk where your filming will take place (trailing cables/traffic/other objects)?
One of our filming locations is in a park that is surrounded by woodland so one of the bigger risks will be tripping over the tree roots/ branches in the area. Some areas of that same location are not flat ground so when walking or running through that area there is a chance of falling. The other location we have planned to use is in a house, there’s no carpet in the house so there is a risk of slipping on the wood flooring or tripping over loose wires and hitting ourselves on the surrounding furniture.

2.    What will you do to ensure these risks are minimised?
To ensure we don’t trip in the house we will wear shoes indoors so it’s less likely to slip and tape the wires to the walls so they won’t be loose. In the park we will find an area that is surrounded by trees but also have some flat ground nearby so it still looks like they’re running through the woods but will be safer.

3.    Will the time of day/weather affect the outcome of the photos? Have you allowed for this?
The time of the day will not be a factor that will affect our video as there is an option on the camera that allows the footage to look as though it’s night during the day. However the weather could produce hazards when we’re outdoors as we’ll be filming in the woods and the rain/snow could make it slippy which is an issue at this time of the year (autumn approaching winter).

4.    Have you considered the background to your photos, particularly if taken outside? How will you ensure you will get the background you want?
The background for the images will be in the woods so we’ll be able to easily achieve the ideal background by taking the pictures in front of the trees in the dark with the light under the mask to make it look more sinister. If that does not work for whatever reason we can take a picture of the mask and photoshop it onto a pre-existing image of the woods.

5.    Have you considered lighting? What about the ‘problems’ of natural lighting, either outside, or streaming through a window? Will you need to use a flash? Have you considered reflective objects that might spoil the effect?
We have found a way around making the mask visible by using a phone light just under the chin of the mask as a bigger light would be too much as kill the creepy effect, so the phone light is just enough. We will need some form of artificial lighting to place around in the woods but not too much so it still looks natural. We will not need another form of lighting in the house as the house lights there will be enough and also look natural.

6.    Do you need permission to take photos in the place/venue you have in mind?
No, the place we want to film/take pictures in is a public area and the filming that will be done in the house belongs to someone helping with the filming so we already have permission.

7.    Do you need to book time in a room (eg the photography studio)?
No.

8.    Are other people/crowds likely to be an issue for you? What have you done to ensure that it will not spoil the effect?
The park we’ll be filming in is a public area so other people could be around but we’ll probably be filming deeper into the woods so there will not be people interfering with our footage.

9.    Are you reliant on lifts/props/friends’ equipment/models? How have you planned that these things will come together at the appointed time? Plan B?
We are relying on friends to do the acting for our trailer but if they cannot make it we do have backup actors to take their parts. We have bought some of the props ourselves however we are relying on a friend for the clown costume but we are confident that he can provide it. We have created a schedule of the different actors we need at which time so we are working around their college commitments to get as much filming time with them as possible.

 10. Finally, have you thought of every eventuality…?
We have taken the different risks and stunts we will need to have performed and thoroughly researched methods of making the stunts look realistic but completely safe.

Production Week 2

This week we visited the locations we wish to use in our film with our actor who will play our clown. We also took some practice footage throughout the day with different forms of lighting. We took photographs for evidence to show what we had done during the course of our practice filming. We rendered the film and opened it with final cut pro so we could view the footage. After reviewing the tape and seeing ths bit we found useful, we uploaded the footage to YouTube. After we uploadedthe footage to Youtube we began to look for music for ou trailer and alos fonts for our "Coming Soon" that will appear at the end of our trailer.
The Location Recce for our two locations is now finished and we have started our Risk Assessments.

Behind The Scenes Photos

Here are the photos we took during our practice filming in one of our locations:

The next lot of photos are of the location we wish to film in for our exterior scenes.

This is a possible filming location as it gives of a creepy vibe that would be great for the horror movie  conventions we wish to follow in our trailer. However there is running water in this location that could pose some health risks as we are using electrical equipment.

Call Sheet (1) - Test Footage

Filming Groups

Filming Groups:

Every time we film, all three of us will have to be present however not everyone can film on the same date.

Nick (the boyfriend), Lana (the protagonist/main character), Tom (the antagonist/clown)

At some point we will need:

Myself, Leanne and Molly as well as Nick, Lana and Tom

Myself, Leanne and Molly, Lana and Tom

Myself, Leanne and Molly, our chief of police (actor undecided)

We will have to film at different times of the day for each different scene, for example at night one day for our night scene but if that does not work or our actors/actresses can't make it, we will edit it to look like it is night time.

Production Week 1

This week we have completed some of the script and created some rough drafts for possible logos for the production companies. We have made a list of the people we know are going to feature in our films and created permission slips so we can gain their permission to feature in our trailer.
We also have discussed when we're going to be free and who we are going need at each time when filming.

Ancillary Task Deconstructions 2

Layout:
This double page spread has quite a professional look. The large masthead lets us know that this double page spread is a review and also follows the colour scheme of white, red, black and beige. A pull quote from the review is in capitols and in black to catch eyes of the reader and also gives a glance into the review. There's a box in the lower left corner the gives the audience details on the move such as the actors in it, certificate, release date and so on and so forth.

Image:
There's only one main image in this double page spread and it is of the two main hollywood actors in the movie that play the largest parts. This shows the reader who is in the movie before they even read the review so they can make a snap decision if they want to read it or not by who they see in the picture. The image mixes well with the colour scheme as it has beige sort of tint.

Language:
The article goes into great detail while still withholding facts as to not spoil the movie for the reader. It makes comments on the acting and how well this movie was filmed. This will appeal to readers who want to know as much detail about the aspects of the film while still keeping important plot lines under wrap.

Layout:
This double page spread has a large masthead on the left hand side of the page in capitols letting the reader know straight away what this article is for. the use of the movie title in the masthead is quick and to the point. The subheader underneath the masthead tells us the location of the movie so the reader is able to get an idea on what the movie could look like in this setting. A pull quote is placed in a box on the lower right hand of the first page, this provides a partern between the next column and also allows the reader a glimpse at the interview itself. A bubble has been used on the main image to give a special little tid-bit about the movie. The colour scheme of red, white and blue are used throughout the double page spread.

Image:
The article uses a large main image showing the film in production. It shows the main actor and director in the image which allows the reader to know who is in the movie and who helped bring it to life. A lot of movies are judged on who directs them and who acts in them so this is a good way to show the reader. A smaller image has been used between the columns from the movie itself, this allows the reader a quick look into the movie, to see what may be a small clue as to what may happen in it.

Language:
The use of capitols in the masthead bring the reader in and catches their eye.

Layout:
The layour of this double page spread is far different from the two above. Instead of a simple two column article with small columns under a large image this double page spread has gone for a three column article and boarded the article with a variety of different images. The use of red, black, white and blue is followed throughout the double paged spread and the masthead seems a little lost in the noisy page layout. A pull quote is used that's put in a bright red bubble to catch the readers eye and pull them in with this little sliver of the article.

Image:
Several images are used on this page to creat and L boarder around the article itself. The images show the main lead characters and a few behind the scenes photographs. The use of movie images allows the reader a look into the movie and how well it has been produces. The little view in on the cinematography is to get the reader excited about this movie. The behind the scenes images also allow the reader a look into the production of the movie, a further insight.

Language:
The article both promotes the movie and an opening of a view into the movie by seeing the props. This increases the publicity of the movie and also allows the reader to find out new and interesting facts about the movie.
